Dead toll rises to 48 in Mocha disaster: official data reveals

Government’s official data updated the fatality figure of Cyclonic Mocha across the country as 48 including rescue forces as of May 17.

In 11 states and regions affected by the Mocha, a total of 44928 residential houses; 376 religious buildings; 59 monasteries; 439 schools; 59 clinics and hospitals; 11 telecommunication towers; 119 lamp posts; five transformers; one bazaar; two airports and 158 departmental buildings from altogether 1068 villages were damaged in the disaster, according to the announcement by the State Administration Council.

The extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha swept Myanmar’s Rakhine coastal region on May 14. Sittwe, Kyaukphyu and other cities in Rakhine State were damaged a lot in infrastructures, properties, departmental buildings, pagodas, stupas, monasteries and residential houses.

The Myanmar government made precautions since a week ahead of the Cyclone.
