General elections are essential and integral part of democracy : SAC Chairman

The Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC), Senior General Min Aung Hlaing informed that the general elections are essential and integral part of democracy.

The SAC Chairman gave this information in the speech made at the 8th Anniversary of NCA (Nationwide Ceasedfire Agreement) convened on today in Naypyidaw.

There are various types of democratic system. Nowadays, Myanmar is exercising multi-party democracy. In this process, "General Elections" paly essential and integral part for the democracy, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said.

In addition, people in Myanmar have experienced general election throughout the history. Since the parliamentary democratic system of Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League (AFPFL) era to the multi-party democratic system of the previous general elections performed 'Fast Past The Post' system which culminated the absence of the balance of the power and it could be observed that ethnic parties hardly had the chamce to participate in politics, Senior General said.

Besides, There are 8 major national ethnics and more than 130 ethnic groups as minorities in Myanmar. Therefore, it is necessary to build a strong federal union with all the ethic nationalities, he asserted.

Federalism stands for "coexistence and sharing". When it comes to sharing, the "Proportional Representation System" (PR system) must be exercised for all-inclusive participation of ethnic groups, instead of the FPTP system.

There were also announcements that the SAC will convened the general election by using Myanmar's Electronics Voting Machine (MEVM) under PR system.
