Thai government reportedly interested in suspending operations at Dawei SEZ

According to the reports, the Thai government shows interest in the suspending operations at the Dawei Special Economic Zone and contacted for inquiry to resume.

He discussed this matter at the coordination meeting held in Naypyidaw on January 10 for the central committee on Myanmar Special Economic Zones.

The Dawei SEZ project was signed the MoU in 2008.

He informed that the Italian-Thai company, which was assigned the task but unable to proceed further. The project was terminated for various reasons.

However, due to the political changes in Thailand, plans are underway to connect the Dawei SEZ with the Thai government to resumed the operations, he also added.

“As my opinion, there will be a betterment of economy, domestic businesses, job opportunities since another country interested in it. It’s good to take chance. But it will take time. It will be better to get investments from not only domestic also from foreign. It is necessary for domestic. This is Special Economic Zone for those public also for businesses,” an economic expert remarked to NP News.

The Dawei SEZ covers an area of 20,000 hectares and will become the largest economic zone in Southeast Asia upon completion of the project.

The Dawei SEZ includes the Dawei Deep Sea Port, industrial zone area and the 105-mile-long 8-lane superhighways that will connect to Kanchanaburi in Thailand, railways, power lines, oil and natural pipelines, and it is planned to include the border entry zone.
