It is reported that border trade between Myanmar and Thailand is now permitted to use the container system at coastal harbors.

The announcement regarding the new border trade regulations between Myanmar and Thailand was made by the Department of Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, on April 11.

For the Department of Trade, the use of the container system for border trade between Myanmar and Thailand will be permitted for the routes of Yangon-Kawthoung-Ranong and Ranong-Kawthoung-Yangon through coastal harbors.

The announcement states that by allowing trade in this manner, it can expedite the flow of trade, marking a new initiative for border trading.

Hence, exporters and importers are advised to adhere to the standard procedures set by the respective departments in order to utilize the Border Trade Method for exporting from (Yangon-Kawthoung-Ranong) and importing from (Ranong-Kawthoung-Yangon).

As of 2023 December, there have been ongoing armed conflicts between the Myanmar Military and alliances of KNU, KNLA, and PDF within Kawkareik Township in Kayin State. Consequently, the Asian Highway, which serves as the major trading route for Thai-Myanmar border trade, has been blocked for transportation.

Furthermore, the Myawaddy Trading Route, which is a crucial border area trading route and accounts for over 25% of the country's border trade, has been suspended at present due to the ongoing armed conflicts and hostilities. This route is of significant importance for the country's trade.
