According to the bamboo producer U Kyaw Win, attempts will be made to expand the international market for bamboo handicrafts when the bamboo special model zone is established in Naypyidaw.
At present, bamboo handicrafts are highly demanded by both domestic and foreign countries. However, the market is less attractive for the producers due to the unfavourable earnings.
"There are also craftsmen, markets and demands from both abroad and domestic. However, just a few people do this. The Small-Scale Industries Department provides trainings for bamboo handicrafts. Making the bamboo handiworks are very intricate and detailed. The market and earning are not very attractive for the producers. Handicrafts are appreciated at their full value in some countries. Some can generate good earning since they can do good quality while some of them are not professional yet. So, the market demand is high and there are few people who make them," U Kyaw Win said.
The report states that the bamboo special model zone that will be established in Naypyidaw will play a key to promote the bamboo handworks and it is expected to expand the international market.
"We are trying to develop a bamboo-themed zone in Naypyidaw. If it succeeds, new generations will be produced and there will be new markets from it. If we really want to expand the market to the international sphere, we need to have a bamboo zone,” he said.
At present, Myanmar exports the bamboo handcrafts in the small-scale especially to the European countries.
Stakeholders proposed officials to deliver technologies and species to produce the bamboo-related products in the special zone, and there will be the bamboo craft centres in the zone.
