Dr. Than Htike, director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Mandalay Division) under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture told The NP News that activities are underway to systematically restore and maintain the ancient Atumashi Monastery and Shwe Kyaung in Mandalay.
On November 25, Union Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin and Mandalay Chief Minister U Myo Aung conducted an inspection of the systematic restoration and maintenance work underway on the bridge in western Mandalay Moat, Atumashi Monastery and Shwe Kyaung.
"Maintenance works are being undertaken to enhance the illumination of the Buddha statues in Atumashi Monastery. Plans are in place to install teak parquet flooring on the original temple and commence renovation and maintenance work. These efforts are specifically focused on Atumashi Monastery," he said.
According to Dr. Than Htike, "An engineering team has conducted surveys to assess the lighting requirements for Atumashi Monastery,".
"The engineering team responsible for illuminating the monastery will conduct necessary surveys. The team has already assessed the upper sections constructed by the authorities and calculated optimal lighting positions. Additionally, the calculations for installing the tiled flooring have been completed, and the team has commenced implementation," he said.
"Maintenance work has commenced on the deteriorated timber components, including beams and base supports, on the western side of the Zaytawon Saung at Shwe Monastery. As the work has only recently begun, progress is only approximately 10%," explained Dr. Than Htike.
