Phyo (NP News) - March 8
The 110-megawatt nuclear reactor is scheduled to be built with Russian technology and the Dawei deep-sea port project will be jointly developed with Russia, State Administration Council (SAC) spokesman Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun told reporters after the Myanmar-Russia Business Forum in Moscow, Russia, on March 5.
A Myanmar delegation led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the SAC, has been on a state-level goodwill visit to Russia and held a Myanmar-Russia Business Forum on March 5.
During the visit, an agreement was reached to build a 110-megawatt nuclear reactor in Myanmar using Russian technology, and the Dawei deep-sea port project will be implemented in collaboration with Russia, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun after the forum.
“First, a 110-megawatt nuclear reactor will be built in Myanmar with Russian technology. In addition, we will jointly build the Dawei deep-sea port, which will be an important economic base in Southeast Asia, with Russia. This is a very large project. Why is the Dawei deep-sea port important? The Dawei deep-sea port is located in the lower (southern) part of Myanmar. Below the Dawei deep-sea port is the Strait of Malacca. The Strait of Malacca is a passageway connecting the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean," he said.
Since Russia has connections with ports in Vietnam, if the Dawei deep-sea port is connected to Vietnamese ports, Russian-Myanmar cooperation will become a key project in the economic hub of Southeast Asia, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
"These are the reasons why Russia already has relations with Vietnam, so if Vietnam connects its ports with the Dawei deep-sea port, we see Russian-Myanmar cooperation as a key business that will become an economic hub in Southeast Asia," the SAC spokesperson said.
Russian President Putin said that during the SAC chairman's visit to Russia on March 4, he met with Russian President Putin and agreed to build a small nuclear power plant in Myanmar.
In addition, during the visit of the SAC Chairman, 10 agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed between the governments of Myanmar and Russia, including a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of nuclear and radiation safety regulations for the peaceful use of atomic energy.
“During our discussions with President Putin, we were able to discuss how to strengthen the Myanmar-Russia partnership. We were able to discuss how to improve all aspects of the economy, politics, and society," said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.–
