Shan State Government Spokesperson and Minister of Commerce U Khun Thein Maung told The Statesman Journal that plans are underway to operate an antique steam train based in Kalaw Township, Shan State.
The minister said that this program is being implemented with the aim of developing tourism and those will run from Kalaw to Nyaung Shwe or Kalaw to Aungpan.
"This is being planned to help boost tourism at a time when our country is experiencing a decline in tourism due to disasters. We are currently conducting the necessary checks to ensure safety throughout the journey," he said.
The locomotive that will run the route was manufactured in England in 1950. Initially, three carriages were planned, but the number of carriages could be changed depending on the engine power, said U Khun Thein Maung.
“We can’t say exactly how much it costs. This trip is designed to allow travelers to relax and enjoy the natural scenery on the train. This project won’t be fast, so we can’t say exactly how much it will cost,” he explained.
The minister added that the trip is planned to begin around November, when the next tourist season resumes.
