According to locals, the AA released a man who had attempted to commit rape in Lunlonepike village, Myebon Township, Rakhine State, and provided him with protection by giving him a certificate of good conduct.
According to local sources, in May 2024, a 23-year-old woman who had fled to Lunlonepike Village to escape conflict was assaulted during the night while using the toilet. A 24-year-old local resident, Myo Thet Naing, reportedly attempted to rape her. In addition to the attempted rape, he allegedly tried to strangle her, struck her chest, and attempted to drown her in a nearby well beside the toilet when she resisted.
Due to the violent nature of the assault and the woman's call for help, local villagers intervened in time and apprehended the suspect, handing him over to the AA. However, it was reported that he was released about a week later.
It was reported that the suspect remained free for over a year, during which time both the AA-appointed township officer and the village administrator issued character references affirming his “good conduct.” However, due to growing public pressure and repeated demands from the local community, he was eventually re-arrested.
Robberies, rapes, and sexual assaults are reported to be continuing in AA-controlled areas such as Minbya, Buthidaung, and Pauktaw townships, and local residents are increasingly criticizing the AA for not being able to effectively handle the situation.
