NP News - July 13
There are a total of nearly 300b MMK of electricity utility charges as residues that people are liable to pay to the State, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE).

As free-riders failed to pay the charges for more than one year commencing from the bill for December 2020, which makes the country suffered from an accumulation of credit receivable amounted to billions.

“Electricity bill is a charge payable to the State. It isn’t a tax. It is a charge as per usage. At present, the country is receivable the charges amounted to 300b MMK,” a senior official from the MOEE said.

The ministry grants a three-month waiting period for the public to pay the electricity charges. For failure to pay after three months, first, authorities cut off the power to the houses that fail to pay. Then, another three months will be granted. For failure to pay again even after the electricity is cut off, this time, the authorities remove the power boxes of the relevant houses.

The free-riders will be charged under relevant legal sections for negligence to pay charges to the State after the waiting period.

As the authorities cut the power line for disregarding electricity payment, many people become queuing now at the electricity offices to pay, which condition somehow becomes a concern for both security and health risks to the public.

Although the MOEE announced that mobile banking payment is available, situations are difficult in-ground practices.
