The Union Election Commission told that polling station officers in the upcoming election may potentially involve credible and reliable persons from other sectors not only teachers (from the education).

The UEC spokesperson Khin Maung Win gave this information during the Q&A session of the 18th press conference held today (July 26) in Naypyidaw.

There are criteria when appointing the polling station officers in an aspect of reliability and credibility of personal reputation; mostly appointed the civil servants.

Khin Maung Win said, “We have criteria to appoint the polling station officers. There is no provision to appoint the teachers. However, the teacher population is large among the civil servants, and the electoral process has to be conducted very extensively up to village levels. Therefore, teachers are traditionally appointed as the polling station officers.”

There are 17,000 village tracts countrywide. There are more than 3,9000 (nearly 40,000) polling stations across the country.

He continued, “As consideration on the past experiences, there may be reliable and credible persons from other sectors appointed as the polling station officers not only from the education sector (the teachers).”

Polling station officers should involve personnel from the immigration department, fire station department, or the red cross so as to make sure the check and balance between the polling officers, critics say.
