The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (NREC) expects the Mount Popa area as the very first national-level geo-garden in the country with an estimated 14 geo-territories.
The Union Minister of the NREC told this information during the national level meeting of the committee for geo-garden (2/2022) that was held in Naypyidaw on July 27 at the Department of Forest.
There are many places with paleobotanical things in Myanmar that can be determined as the potential world list geo-gardens. Amongst, the Mount Popa area is a site rich in fossils, Bagan age ironworks, and bio-diversity species. Fossils of the elephant with four tusks or the Gomphotheres can be found in the Mount Popa region. The minister said to try first the Mount Popa region to be designed as the national level geo-garden as the forerunner of the world-class.
The global geo-park program is reportedly known as one of UNESCO’s cultural development and preservation programs.
