NP News – Feb 10

#Union_Democracy_Party, locally known as the Rose Party as people referring to its symbol, submitted the application for the party establishment and registration on February 9 at the Union Election Commission with 25 founding members.

The UDP is formerly known as United Democratic Party as of the 2020 Election primarily founded in 2007. It firstly registered as a political party in 2010, in fact, before other local political parties submitted at that time.

With regard to the establishment of the new party, one of the founding members, Ye Naing Tun told NP News, “We submitted the application for the party registration yesterday evening. We intend to contest the upcoming election at the national level.”

At present, the party has not elected a chairman and secretary yet.

Ye Naing Tun continued, “After we get approval for the party registration from the UEC, the second application will be submitted together with organizational structure, names of the chairman and secretary, party logo, and the party flag. We will officially organize to have the minimum party members as designated by the UEC only when we get approval from the UEC. We are confident to have more than three hundred thousand members within a month.”

The UDP, when it was the United Democratic Party, was nullified legal status in the 2020 Election campaign period by the National League for Democracy appointed UEC.

It was a debate on justice in an aspect of the nullification of the former UDP by the NLD-appointed UEC just before the 2020 Election. In fact, the former UDP contested the 2020 Election with 1131 candidates, which stood shoulder against the ruling NLD at that time with 1151 candidates.

The partisans, supporters, and members of the former UDP did not protest or show aggressiveness on the act of nullifying their organization by the authority just before Election Day even though the debate arose in the political sphere for the NLD’s unfair treatment against its competitors at that point in time.

One of its partisans said, “After the coup, we still believe in the election as the right political path on the road to democracy; and we didn’t join in the armed resistance.”

The State Administration Council enacted a new law for the political party’s registration on January 26, 2023 under Law No. 15/2023. The bylaw, rules, and regulations for the #Political_Parties_Registration_Law were issued by the UEC on January 31 under Order No. 10/2023 and Notification No. 2/2023 and 3/2023.

The upcoming fresh election is announced to be held under the Proportional Representation electoral system. The #2020_Election result was annulled due to the NLD’s malpractices and voting frauds.
