An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation told The Statesman that efforts will be made to establish more universities specializing in agriculture, livestock and farming.
The Agricultural University and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Naypyidaw are producing agricultural and veterinary experts every year. However, to meet the needs, authorities are planning to open new agricultural and veterinary universities in upper and lower Myanmar. The first coordination meeting to expand the number of universities was held by U Min Naung, union minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.
“The Chairman of the State Administrative Council previously set it as the policy. We are now working on it. It is a preliminary meeting. We will do it. The locations have not been confirmed yet. The situation will be worked out. These universities have to work out. It is the chairman’s will for the country to become two schools from one. We will make it happen. For now, we are just making preliminary arrangements. We have not done anything in detail yet,” the official said.
The official said that Myanmar is a country that mainly relies on agriculture for its livelihood and that the need for more experts in agricultural education is increasing, and that the opening of such a university will only make agricultural education more convenient for the country.
“Myanmar is an agricultural country. Since it is an agricultural country, we need experts. Another thing is that we already have water and land resources. But what is difficult for us is that we need technology. We will have those required technologies from the newly developed universities. Only then, will our country be able to advance in this sector. Now, our country cannot produce with high productivity due to poor technology. Other countries are doing with advanced technologies,” he explained.
He also added that the agriculture and livestock sector is an important sector for the country.
“Food is important for human being. Our food needs to be nutritious. Therefore, we have to focus on the agriculture and farming. Otherwise, we won’t be okay. Therefore, food is important. Other things are second priority," he said.
