It is reported that Myanmar Police Force has sentenced those involved in sending workers to an online scam in Cambodia to 10 years in prison for human trafficking.
Daw Zar Zar San and her husband, Khin Maung Lwin, who live in Kume in Myittha Township, Mandalay Region, gathered four young men from the township and told them that her son, Lwin Min Htet, was working in a Cambodian online slot game business. They said that, since their son is acquainted with the owner of the business, each young person would earn a monthly salary of 4,000,000 kyats, with all travel expenses covered.
Then, they were transported through Mandalay Airport to Tachileik. From there, they took an illegal route to Thailand, and then traveled on to the slot game industry in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
After they were sent, it was reported that one of the young people, who was unable to type on a computer, was threatened by the leader, Swan Lin Htet, with being sold if he could not pay USD 1,900 in travel expenses to a KBZ Pay account (Ph No. 09 767704410) under the name Paing Thet Kyaw. He was warned that if he tried to escape, the handlers would physically beat and abuse him.
In addition, the other three young men were forced to commit online fraud for money without a break all day long, and if they couldn't find someone to cheat, they were forced to do about 200 push-ups.
Therefore, the father of the young man, who could not type on a computer, transferred 10.5 million kyats as compensation to Paing Thet Kyaw Acc via KBZ Pay, and the young man was sent back to Myanmar. After investigating, the No. (11) Anti-Human Trafficking Police Unit (Mandalay) filed a complaint, and the Myittha Township, Kume Police Station filed a case under Section 38(b) of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.
On December 30, the Kyaukse District Court sentenced the two arrested, Daw Zar Zar San and U Khin Maung Lwin, to serve 10 years in prison with hard labor under Section 36 of the Prevention and Suppression of Trafficking in Persons Law, and issued a warrant for the escapees, Swan Lin Htet, Paing Thet Kyaw, and Lwin Min Htet, under Section 87/88 of the Criminal Procedure Code. –
