Magnitude 5.9 earthquake damages a lot around Mohnyin

A moderate earthquake with magnitude 5.9 Richter Scale broke out around Mohnyin township in Kachin State and damaged a lot.

On May 31 at 5:55 pm, a moderate earthquake hit with epicenter inside Myanmar about 22 miles northwest of Hopin and about 68 miles north-northwest of Katha seismological observatory.

“It hit about 68 miles from Katha seismological observatory. The nearest place is about 22 miles northwest of Hopin hit by 5.9 Richter Scale. It was a moderate earthquake occurred around those places of Katha, Mohnyin, Moekaung and Kanbalu,” the deputy director of the sub-department of earthquake, Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe told NP News.

The earthquake left lots of damages around Indawgyi in Mohnyin township located in Kachin state.

"Pagodas, schools and some other places were destroyed in the earthquake,” the spokesperson from Kachin State Government, Win Ye Htun said.

“Damages aren't much in Mohnyin. But there were many destroyed by the earthquake in Inndawgyi. Roads were cracked; and walls collapsed as the earthquake hit roughly but it didn’t take long,” a Mohnyin resident informed NP News.

The Deputy Director, Dr. Yin Myo Min Htwe suggested and urged to carry out preparations before earthquake since it is a kind of disaster that can occur at any time.
