Sexual assault scandal emerges at Islamic school in downtown, Yangon

In a religious school located in the center of Yangon, it is reported that some children being sexually assaulted by two madrassa teachers and the authorities have not investigated and taken action yet.

The news of sexual assaults on some kids at Madrasah Nurul Islam, located in 26th Street, Pabedan Township, spread through social media.
The so-called perpetrators were identified as Maulana Moosa and Maulana Abdur Rashid, as reported on social media posts.
Some posts on social media are circulating online alleging that two individuals were involved in cases of sexual abuse and harassment against students at Madrasah Nurul Islam Religious School on December 12. Reportedly, they confessed their actions before the school's faculty board.
Furthermore, a post on a social networking site has been discovered, announcing the expulsion of the individuals involved in the sexual violence from the religious school.
There have been requests and suggestions urging all religious institutions to take action against sexual abuse and violence, as all religions strictly prohibit such acts. Some are insisting that cases of this nature should be investigated by the relevant security forces.
In relation to the aforementioned matter, NP News contacted the Pabedan Township Police Station. An official stated, "We are currently on the way to file the case. As they are all attending the mosque, they are expected to arrive soon. We have received information that the case will be filed. As of now, they have not arrived,” said on 14 December.
Additionally, as parents of the victims, there are also urges online for the cooperation with the relevant security forces and active collaboration to seek justice for cases of sexual violence.
"A case of this nature falls under criminal jurisdiction. The victims need to cooperate actively for necessary actions. Investigations should be conducted thoroughly to ensure appropriate measures," stated a former police member to NP News.
On 15 December evening, the two Maulanas were opened file under Section 377/511 of the Criminal Code at the Pabedan Police Station. However, the report says both of them escaped and releasing as of now.
In 2022, there were nearly 900 reported rape cases, with over 600 of them involving child victims, according to statistics released by the State Administration Council.
