The Ministry of Commerce reports that Myanmar has been actively trying to resume corn exports to eight countries, including India and Thailand.

Myanmar typically exports around 2.6 million tons of corn annually, and corn exporters are optimistic about exceeding that figure in 2024.

Previously, Myanmar had export markets in Bangladesh, India, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. Currently, the Ministry is actively working to reclaim its export markets in these countries and is engaged in necessary coordination efforts.

Similarly, Myanmar's corn will now have the opportunity to export to Thailand, as tariffs have been exempted starting from February. Consequently, a higher volume of Myanmar's corn is expected to be exported.

Soe Win Maung, the advisor of the Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize, and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, informed NP News, "Thailand has waived tariffs from February to August 31st. Merchants are trying to grasp this opportunity to increase exports. It's a common practice when tariffs are waived. At the other time, the market shifts to other countries. Thailand serves as a significant exporter of maize. Since there is a global demand for maize, we are actively exploring opportunities to export to other countries as well."

In the past, China was our primary exporter for Myanmar corn. However, there is a growing demand for Myanmar corn in Thailand now.

Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce is reportedly leading efforts to open corn export channels in the Philippines, China, Singapore, and Vietnam.
