The Yangon City Development Committee reports that construction of the underpass near Shwedagon Pagoda is more than halfway complete. The underpass will have a capacity of the flow of over 14,000 people per hour.

The underpass connecting the Western Entrance of Shwedagon Pagoda and People’s Square Park is being constructed to enhance convenience for both traffic and pedestrians commuting between the two locations, as well as to modernize the infrastructure for the benefit of the public.

Following a ground clearance ceremony in October 2023, construction of the underpass is now underway.

The underpass will be 23 feet wide with a capacity for approximately 14,000 people to pass through per hour. Additionally, it will feature four escalators and two lifts designed for individuals with disabilities, each capable of accommodating 10 passengers at a time.

The project is expected to span approximately 14 months, with the current progress indicating that 60.71 percent of the construction work has been completed, as reported by the YCDC.

Yangon's first pedestrian underpass, located near Yangon University of Education on Pyay Road in Kamayut Township, is now open to the public.
