The Union Election Commission (UEC) has informed political parties that they are working to allow voters to cast their ballots using not only paper ballots but also voting machines in the upcoming election.
The UEC and 49 registered political parties met at the Commission's office in Naypyidaw on 24 August.
During the meeting, the UEC chairman U Ko Ko urged political parties to strive to become strong and credible parties that are trusted by the voting public.
In addition, U Ko Ko informed the attendees about the efforts being made to allow voters to cast their ballots not only with paper ballots but also with the Myanmar Electronic Voting Machine (MEVM) in the upcoming election.
“Essentially, yesterday the Election Commission told the parties that they have made significant preparations for the general election. They explained that they have made a lot of preparations for what needs to be done before, during, and after the election, including the necessary laws and equipment. The Commission said they are well on their way with these preparations," said U Khaing Min, Vice-Chairman of the New National Democracy Party, to NP News.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has stated that the next general election will be held in 2025.
As of now, there are 67 political parties that have submitted applications to register at the Union Election Commission. Among them, 49 parties have been granted registration.
