Phyo (NP News) - Dec 16

According to the reports, the Pangsau Pass, India-Myanmar border gate in the Naga self-administered region, Sagaing Region which had been closed for seven years will be officially opened by India.

The gate was closed due to armed Nagas along the Indian border, but for India, this border gate is considered vital both economically and politically for connecting with neighbouring countries in the region.

Currently, with the approval of the India-Myanmar Joint Border Market Committee, the border gate is set to reopen on December 15.

The residents of Pangsau and Nanyun Townships in the Naga-administered region rely on Indian goods, and during the gate's closure, they experienced food shortages and sky-high prices.

While the people of Pangsau had to rely on supplies from Myitkyina and Tanai Townships in Kachin State during the closure, they are now facing further challenges due to ongoing battles in these two townships.

If the border gate was opened by India on December 15, it would be convenient for the locals, according to the local sources.

On December 6, the Ministry of Border Affairs and the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar met in Naypyidaw to commemorate the completion of several joint development projects in the Chin and Naga regions of Myanmar, as well as along the India-Myanmar border. India has supported infrastructure development in these regions with a total of $5 million annually as part of a five-year plan.

Additionally, to strengthen further cooperation in Chin State and the Naga region, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Myanmar and India is expected to be signed soon to formalize the collaboration between the two countries.
