189 foreigners repatriated for online scams

On March 18, Myanmar authorities deported 189 foreign nationals, including one Japanese citizen, for their involvement in online gambling, scams, and other criminal activities in areas such as Myawaddy, Shwe Kokko, Maehtawthalay, Min Let Pan and KK Park areas in Kayin State.
With consideration for humanitarian concerns and international relations, one Japanese citizen, 169 Indonesians, and 19 Bangladeshis were handed over to their respective countries through the No 2 Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge.
Officials from Kayin State Government, Kayin State Security and Border Affairs Minister, and representatives from Japan, Indonesia, and Bangladesh were present to ensure proper handover procedures. All necessary legal and official documents were systematically transferred to their respective authorities.
The handover ceremony attended by officials from Myanmar’s government, as well as diplomatic officials including Mr Md Fahad Pervez Bosunia from the Bangladesh Embassy in Thailand, Mr Judha Nugraha from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and First Secretary Naoto Watanabe from the Japanese Embassy in Thailand. Authorities recently detained 180 Chinese nationals and 62 Ethiopian nationals for illegal entry into Myanmar via Myawaddy and the KK Park area. Verification of their details and records is underway to facilitate their prompt repatriation.
During the period of January 30th to March 18th, 2025, Myanmar detained 7,107 foreign nationals for unlawful entry. Legal deportation procedures were completed for 4,191 individuals, who were sent to their home countries via Thailand. The remaining 2,916 are under care, awaiting their scheduled deportation.
The majority of those detained are Chinese nationals, with others from Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, Thailand, Rwanda, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Ghana, Bangladesh, Japan, Sri Lanka, various African countries, and several North African and Asian nations, including Tunisia, Algeria, Congo, Cameroon, and Chinese Taipei.
