Unconditional amnesty paves way for Dr. Aye Maung's candidacy in Amyotha Hlttaw

Dr. Aye Maung, the chairman of the Arakan Front Party, who was convicted of high treason during the previous NLD government, has been granted unconditional amnesty from his remaining criminal sentences.
Dr. Aye Maung was convicted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 122(1) for remarks he made during a speech in Mrauk-U, Rakhine State, in 2018.
These sentences were pardoned in 2021, but if he commits similar crimes again, he will have to serve the remaining sentences.
Under the amnesty issued on September 11, Dr. Aye Maung will be released from his remaining sentences and will also be allowed to run for Hluttaw.
According to the statement, Dr. Aye Maung was pardoned for the crimes and sentences imposed on him with the recommendation of the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC), in recognition of his commitment to building a union based on democracy and federalism.
Dr. Aye Maung is running for a seat in the Amyotha Hluttaw, representing the Sittwe Township constituency in Rakhine State. –
