The Upper Kyungtaung Project, which began construction in the 2008-2009 fiscal year and has been under implementation for nearly 17 years, is scheduled to be completed in the 2027-2028 fiscal year, according to an investigation by The Statesman.
This hydropower project is being implemented by the Hydropower Implementation Department No. (5) on the Namtein Stream, 14 miles southwest of Keng Tung Town, Shan State (South).
“Currently, only the Upper Kyungtaung project in the southern Shan is still under construction among hydropower projects. We are working hard to complete it by the beginning of the 2027-2028 fiscal year,” said a source close to the Ministry of Electric Power.
The project is currently under construction and is more than 90 percent complete, after nearly 17 years of work, the source said.
“The Upper Kyungtaung Hydropower Project in Shan State has an installed capacity of 51 megawatts. It is the only project currently under implementation. The project is more than 90 percent complete. Once completed, it will provide an additional 700,000 people with access to electricity,” he said.
The project was scheduled for completion in both the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 fiscal years.
The Upper Kyungtaung project is a major regional project that will generate an average of 267 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually with a total installed capacity of 51 megawatts across three 17- megawatt turbines.
The project aims to connect the electricity generated by the Upper Kyungtaung Hydropower Project and the existing Kyungtaung Hydropower Plant to the Namsang Main Substation through a 230 kV transmission line and distribute it via the national power grid.
