Public consultation opens on Muse-Mandalay Railway Project

The Department of Environmental Conservation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation requests the public remarks on the environmental management plan for Muse-Mandalay Railway Project in which a total of 60 tunnels and 124 bridges will be constructed accordingly as per the request from the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The department announced the request on June 16 via the ministry’s website as per the Article 39, 66, 80 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedures.

Public shall send the remarks to the email address [email protected] by August 16, 2022.

Beside 60 tunnels and 124 bridges, the project includes construction of 409.96 km long electric railway, 11 power plant substations and related electricity extension projects.

Regarding the Muse-Mandalay Railway Project, Department of Myanmar Railways of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Limited (CREEC) and China Railway Group Limited signed the MoU to study the feasibility of the project.

Land surveys on the whole project were conducted and completed in 2019. Estimated cost is projected to be USD 8.9 b, according to data released by Myanmar Railways.

The Muse-Mandalay Railway Project is an express train which connects between Muse – a China-Myanmar border and Mandalay – the commercial hub of central Myanmar, and a part of China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, which is aimed to connect between Kyaukphy (the west coast of the country), Yangon (the commercial city) and Muse through Mandalay via various forms of transport including express train, road transports and other trade enhancement infrastructures.
