Hsu / Myo Gyi (NP News) - Oct 3
Union Solidarity and Development Party, one of the major political parties in Myanmar, is going to convene its party conference tomorrow (October 4) to re-elect the new chairman.
The conference will be held for two days (October 4-5) at the USDP headquarter located in Naypyidaw. Tomorrow's event of the USDP will be the third conference of the party.
The current chairman of the USDP is Than Htay who has been serving as the chair since 2016. The Central executive committee has 43 members including Thet Naing Win, the General Secretary. Vice-chairmen are Khin Yee and Hla Tun at the moment.
Chairman Than Htay handed over the party’s duties to vice-chairman Khin Yee as the acting chairman last month due to his health condition.
Current chairman Than Htay was elected in 2016 by the party’s second conference. He served in the military until 2010, then left the army at the rank of Brigadier General. He served as the Union Minister of Rail Transportation between 2013-15.
Union Solidarity and Development Association was established by the State Peace and Development Party before 2000; then it transformed the organizational structures, values and missions into a political spectrum just before the 2010 General Election following the nationwide referendum in 2008.
The USDP submitted party registration in early 2010.
The party won a landslide in the 2010 election and ruled the country’s Pyidaungsu Hluttaw from 2011 to the end of 2015.
Currently, hundreds of its party members have been killed by NUG-installed PDFs across the country.
