NP News – Feb 24

New National Democracy Party (NNDP) which was founded by a renowned political figure Thein Nyunt submitted the application for party renewing registration at the Union Election Commission on February 23.

Thein Nyunt was a member of the State Administration Council after the 2021 February political transition. He became a current member of the Central Advisory Body to the SAC in 2023 after the next six months extension of the State of Emergency period.

The member of the Central Advisory Body was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative in the 2010 General Election representing Yangon’s Thingangyun constituency.

Thein Nyunt, 77, started his political career as a college student in the Burma Socialist Programme Party. When it came to 1990, he was elected for the Pyithu Hluttaw representing National League for Democracy. Then, he was imprisoned for four years in Ye Mon military camp located in Hmawbi, Yangon for his political convictions on the NLD and royalty to Aung San Suu Kyi.

The NNDP will be contesting in the upcoming election at the regional level: Yangon Region.

“Yesterday we applied for the party registration. Our party will be based in Yangon Region. Formerly, we ran for elections nationwide under former Political Parties Law. However, we used to be based in constituencies in Yangon Region especially the Thingangyun constituency,” one of the party leader Khaing Min told NP News.

He continued that the party organizational structure is changed. “Since U Thein Nyunt is a member of the Central Advisory Body of the SAC, he cannot chair the party as per the Constitution. Therefore, he will a mere member.”

The party won’t change the logo and flag. The emblem will also be three bamboo hats with red background.

There are altogether 9 political parties that have applied for party registration after SAC imposed the new #Political_Parties_Registration_Law in 2023.
