According to Myanmar Corn Industrial Association, the country is increasing the quality of corn in order to expand its corn market to ASEAN countries and Japan where it previously mainly exports corn to Thailand.
“We mainly export corns to the Thai market whereas to China, those corns that are cultivated in Shan State in the poppy cultivation projects. We are currently implementing projects to promote the quality of the corn so as to export expanding the market to ASEAN countries and Japan,” a corn businessman said.
At the time being, corn export to Thailand is exempted from free tax and therefore, 80 percent of the total export of corn is heading to Thailand while five percent goes to China.
It is also reported that China purchases corn from Myanmar at global corn price and in fact, Myanmar corns are usually higher in price than the global market price.
In addition, China sets higher product specifications for Myanmar corns. Therefore, Myanmar exports only 70,000 tons of corn per annum to China.
