According to the data released by the Naypyidaw Expressway Police, 163 traffic accidents happened on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway in which nearly 90 people died within January to December 2023.

In the abovementioned traffic accidents, 62 males and 24 females died, and 326 others wounded.

“We have to submit the reports on the individual case to the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) whether the accidents were happened due to the human errors or the road or the vehicle or is it due to the weather condition. If the case was due to the human errors, there will be many explanations on it. Most accidents were found out that due to the reckless of the drivers,” an official from the office of the Naypyidaw Expressway Police told NP News.

In 2022, a total of 196 traffic accidents occurred which led 57 deaths and 280 injuries.

“Unfavourable conditions of road also have to be considered in the cause of the accidents. Another cause is due to the reckless of the drivers. With regard to the road conditions, some parts of the road aren’t smooth though some parts of the road are being fixed. Accidents occur when the drivers went sleepy during driving,” said an official from the Expressway Fire Station.

The statistics show that although the number of traffic accidents that occurred in 2023 on the expressway is lower than that of 2022, fatalities and injuries were increased.
