International backing grows for Myanmar’s 2025 election amid regional challenges

At least three countries, including neighboring nations, have expressed their willingness to support Myanmar’s upcoming 2025 General Election, which will be conducted by the State Administration Council (SAC).
The Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has stated that efforts are underway to host the general election in 2025.
Union Election Commission (UEC) Chairman U Ko Ko and Thai Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Mongkol Visitstump recently met to discuss election matters.
During the meeting, they also discussed the conditions under which Thailand would be able to assist in holding the election, as stated in a press release by the SAC.
Based on information from the Union Election Commission, it has been observed that in previous periods, the Union Election Commission and the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar also met and discussed. During these meetings, the Indian government expressed its intention to continue cooperating with and providing assistance to Myanmar’s Election Commission.
Furthermore, a delegation led by Mr. Sholban Kara-Ool, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma, Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, expressed Russia’s intention to assist in the upcoming elections in Myanmar during their meeting with the Chairman of the SAC.
Myanmar's UEC and Russia's Central Election Commission have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on election matters.
“They also welcome it since we have also announced that the election will be held through a democratic system building the union basing federal. Since we announced that the election will be held officially, all the countries that came up with the election will also welcome the election that we are going to hold. That’s my remark,” a spokesperson from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Hla Thein told The NP News.
Ms. Sun Haiyan, vice-minister of the International Department, Central Committee of CPC also said, “China is ready to give help for the election in Myanmar,” during a talk with representatives of four political parties last month in China.
The political parties have considered that the election is a political egress in order to overcome the conflict and crises currently occurring in Myanmar.
To prepare for holding elections in Myanmar, the SAC is organizing a nationwide census. The SAC has announced that the voter lists for the election will be compiled based on the information obtained from this census. However, Myanmar is currently experiencing armed conflicts and regional instability.
Due to regional instability, the SAC has indicated that elections will be prioritized in areas that are stable and peaceful.
