Phyo (NP News) - Dec 22
The South Korean government announced on December 18 that it will no longer accept the extension of expired passports stamped by the embassy of the National Unity Government (NUG), a shadow government attempting to function as a parallel government to the official State Administration Council (SAC).
The South Korea-based NUG office has been extending passports for participants in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), those living with temporary residence G1-99 visas, and individuals facing difficulties in renewing their passports since July of this year, in competition with the SAC government.
The NUG embassy has been extending passports, and following this, there has been an increase in rumors made by some pro-violence groups, both within South Korea and abroad, on their social media platforms, including Facebook. It has also been confirmed that many individuals have visited that office to renew their passports.
As news emerged about the extension of passports, the Myanmar embassy in South Korea issued a statement in mid-October. The statement warned Myanmar nationals to be cautious about using passports that have been extended with counterfeit illegal stamps. It advised them to avoid any unlawful actions related to passport extensions or use, and reminded individuals to be mindful when using their Myanmar passports. The embassy also cautioned that any involvement in fraudulent activities could lead to legal consequences in both the home country and the host country. It further stated that if any violations are discovered, the passports would be revoked and individuals may be blacklisted.
Currently, the South Korean government announced on December 18 that it will no longer accept the extension of passports issued by the NUG office in South Korea.
