NP News - July 14
Peter Vowles from the British Embassy in Yangon left Myanmar before his visa expires after he returned to collect his personal belongings, according to statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar (MOFA).

The MOFA released a statement today (July 14) to respond to Peter Vowles’ Twitter on July 13.

He tweeted that he was forced by the military to leave Myanmar and his duty in the country was ended.

“It does not turn out to be true and is far from reality,” the statement said.

Pete Vowles was allowed to re-enter the country as per his request to pack up his staff to make a final leave. But he wanted to stay serving as a diplomatic representative without presenting his credentials to the government.

The statement said, “Upon request by the UK side, the Ministry granted permission for Mr. Peter Vowles to return to Myanmar to collect his personal belongings from 21 June 2022 to 15 July 2022. As such, Mr. Peter Vowles has left Myanmar before his visa expires.”

“It is observed that Mr. Peter Vowles intended to serve as British Ambassador in Myanmar without presenting his credentials violating the well-established diplomatic ethics and Codes of Conduct. In this regard, Mr. Peter Vowles had to leave Myanmar as the Myanmar Government has acted in accordance with diplomatic practices as a sovereign state,” the statement added.

Peter Vowles was primarily proposed by Britain as an Ambassador-Designate on June 22, 2021; and he arrived in Myanmar on July 29, 2021. Following his arrival, he did not present his credentials to the government, according to the MOFA.
