Labour ministry affirms no discrimination against 5/, 8/, 9/ NRC holders in working environment

The Ministry of Labour made clarification that no unfair treatment is made against 5/, 8/ and 9/ national registration card holders in the working places especially in the industrial zones located in Yangon Region.

5/ represents national registration card for Sagaing residents, 8/ represents Magwe residents while 9/ represents Mandalay residents.

On August 25, anti-government group that was allied between Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar and other labour affairs organizations conducted a protest in front of a garment factory that is reportedly owned by a Chinese national. The protest condemned discriminations or unfair treatment against those who hold 5/, 8/, 9/ NRCs.

With regard to the protest, the Labour Ministry conducted an investigation.

The ministry clarified that the factory that was accused by the protestors of treating mibehaviours to the abovementioned NRC holders did not fire wrongfully. Only those who violated the company disciplines were taken action in accord with the rules; and there was no unusual incident of worker affairs within the factory. Even the protestors aren’t the employees of the factory. Last but not least, the factory is owned by a Korean national, not a Chinese as saying by the protestors.

“We hereby issue press statement that the information that was published by the CTUM Myanmar page was a fake; and it was a mere propaganda intending to contaminate working environment tranquility,” the Ministry of Labour stated.

After the military takeover of the State power on February 1, 2021, tensions of the armed clashes between the Defense Services and the PDF troops have been increasing in Sagaing and Magwe regions. Some youths from those two regions joined the armed-resistance courses after coup while some migrants to Yangon for job and learning opportunities.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour Nyunt Win told NP News that no restriction has been made on 5/, 8/ and 9/ National Registration Card holders with respect to the job opportunities; no official announcement to restrict or limit the employment possibility was issued.
