Myanmar’s significant stupas to be built in Spain for Buddhism-based Asia-Europe tourism industry

Replicas of the remarkable religious buildings from Myanmar are potentially to be built in Spain including temples, stupas and pagodas.

This plan will be a part of The Great Maha Karuna project for the development of Buddhism-based Asia-Europe tourism industry.

Chairman of Lumbini Garden Foundation based in Spain Mr. Jose Maunel Vilanova Aleman told this information during the meeting with the Minister of the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism Dr. Htay Aung on August 30.

Myanmar is playing an important role for successful implementation of this project, so we request all-round assistance from all, said Mr. Jose Manuel Vilanova Aleman.

The Great Maha Karuna project with a total of 110 hectares of land area has already been permitted to carry out the construction in Spain by its government. With expected timeframe of implementation period fifteen years, the project will include pagodas and religious buildings from countries practicing Theravada Buddhism such as Myanmar, Thailand and Nepal. The project has been started since 2018.

"The ministry will continue our efforts in cooperating with relevant departments for the missionary work of Buddhism, development of tourism and strengthening friendship," said Union Minister Dr. Htay Aung.

Replica of Shwezigon Pagoda is projected to be built in the scheme. The project coordinators have already received teachings of Sitagu Sayadaw. Marble stone Buddha statues from Myanmar will be placed there. Currently, a total of 2600 marble stone Buddha statues have already been sent. Another 5280 statues will also be there.

This Buddhism-based tourism in Spain will promote Myanmar’s tourism sector. In addition, opportunities to cooperate between Myanmar-Nepal-Spain in developing the pilgrimage tour of the three countries.
