Myanmar Authorities Prepare Required Plans for Possible Cyclone Disaster in Coastal Areas

The Spokesperson of State Administration Council (SAC) Major General Zaw Min Tun said that the related departments have prepared necessary foods and rescue items at altogether 228 cyclone shelters and storm resilient buildings in Yangon, Rakhine and Ayeyawady Regions.

The weather forecast predicted that there is a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and it is likely that that low pressure area may form into depression. The cyclone is forecasted to entered into Myanmar on 13th and 14th May.

The SAC spokesperson also said that they are now conducting measures like preparing communication devices and rescue items and these things are now ready to be deployed.

For the time being, there are altogether 47 cyclone shelters and 118 storm resilient buildings in the high-risk areas in Ayeyawady Region and another 17 buildings are still under construction as part of the disaster management.

“The rescue items are now ready to deployed. The state level has one warehouse with rescue items and six warehouses at the district level. At the township level, rescue items for altogether 6000 households have already been deployed. The rescue items are categorized into different kits according to their needs. In the rescue kits, there includes clothes, blankets, mosquito nets, pans, bowls and tarpaulins and so on.” Major General Zaw Min Tun said.

For search and rescue work, they have already deployed 59 fiber motorboats, 2500 lifejackets, lifebuoys, water pumps, and pipes in Ayeyawady region.

Also in Yangon, the SAC said that altogether 9 cyclone shelters are ready to function and the rescue items for 5000 households have been prepared for cyclone prone areas close to the coastal and delta areas in Kyauktan, Kongyankone, Kawhmu, Khayan and Thongwa townships.

The SAC spokesperson also said that “In Rakhine State, there are altogether 54 cyclone resilient shelters and 6 more are still under constructions. These shelters are constructed in Kyaukphyu, Mannaung, Sittwe, Pauktaw, Taunggoke and Gwa. For estimated 9,000 households, the rescue items are ready at the State level, district level and township level warehouses.

33 fiber rescue boats, more than 5000 lifejackets, water pumps and pipes have been prepared for ready to be used in the time of emergency in Rakhine State, the authorities said.
