Myanmar discusses with Russia’s ROSATOM on using SMR

A discussion on using SMR was started between Myanmar and Russian State Atomic Energy Cooperation ‘Rosatom’, according to the officials from Rosatom.
The Rosatom informed at the event 'Science Festival 2023' that was held at Yangon Technological University and Nuclear Technology Information Centre on June 30, a final day of the festival.
Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Myo Thein Kyaw, Deputy Minister Dr Aung Zeya with relevant officials and others including professors of Ministry of Science and Technology and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) from Russia attended.
During the event, after the Oliver Stone’s Documentary “Nuclear Now” was staged, one of the professors from MEPhI informed that discussion is being made between Myanmar’s relevant officials and Rosatom for using Small Modular Reactor (SMR) so as to fulfill the demand of Myanmar electricity usages.
Additionally, negotiations are also being conducted between Rosatom and Myanmar to use SMR or huge ones for the projects, he continued.
As per the information, Rosatom has been exporting SMR to many other countries since 2022.
