Tensions are escalating between the MNDAA and TNLA in Hsipaw Township, northern Shan State, raising concerns of potential clashes. A local reported to The NP News that the situation is particularly tense due to the MNDAA's forced recruitment of Palaung ethnic groups. The MNDAA is currently stationed on the outskirts of Hsipaw Town, while TNLA forces are inside the town, increasing the likelihood of territorial disputes.
The resident stated that the MNDAA's forced recruitment of Palaung people is fueling tensions with the TNLA. The MNDAA's presence in Hsipaw Township, especially near public infrastructure, has heightened concerns about the potential for armed conflict.
Despite the absence of direct clashes, tensions remain high in Hsipaw Township, where the MNDAA and TNLA are poised for conflict. Hsipaw Township, larger than Kyaukme, includes the town of Namlan, which the MNDAA has recently seized. This territorial gain brings the MNDAA closer to potential confrontations with the TNLA.
The resident suggested that the MNDAA's current military advantage may deter the TNLA from direct confrontation. In Kyaukme, which remains under TNLA control, reports indicate that the group has forced the reopening of the town market through intimidation and threats, with signs of illegal activities.
They said, 'As for the Kyaukme market, it's reopened. But really, if it doesn't reopen, they'll burn it down or something like that,' threatening people like that. And there are also lawless acts happening," he explained the situation in the area.
