India has expressed its readiness to support Myanmar in developing 5G mobile systems, as announced by Siddharth Mahajan, Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce on October 16, in an economic report by India Times. "We have offered our assistance to Myanmar in establishing their 5G systems," Mahajan stated to India Times reporters.
In 2022, India launched its own 5G telephony services, achieving coverage in approximately 98 percent of districts and 90 percent of villages within just 21 months.
During his speech at the India Mobile Congress 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India's advancements towards 6G technology following the successful implementation of 5G nationwide. He stressed the importance of a global digital framework to ensure the ethical use of technology, drawing parallels to the comprehensive rules that govern the aviation sector.
"In just ten years, the optical fiber network India has established spans eight times the distance between the Earth and the moon. For instance, two years ago, we launched 5G at the Mobile Congress, and today, nearly every district in India is connected to 5G services. India is now the second-largest 5G market in the world, and we are rapidly progressing towards 6G technology," PM Modi stated.
The offer to assist Myanmar in developing its 5G infrastructure was emphasized during the eighth India-Myanmar joint trade committee meeting held last month. Alongside 5G discussions, the two countries also examined potential collaboration in the shipping sector, particularly in establishing a coastal shipping agreement. This partnership aims to boost connectivity and trade between India and Myanmar, highlighting their expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. –
